Curriculum vitae

Education & Qualifications

  • Senior Research Scientist Grade 2: Parasitology, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences & Superior Commission of Attestations of the Republic of Bulgaria (2001)
  • PhD: Parasitology, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences & Superior Commission of Attestations of the Republic of Bulgaria (1994)
  • BSc & MSc: Ecology and Environmental Protection, University of Sofia St Kliment Okhridski, Republic of Bulgaria (1980)

Research Focus

  • Taxonomy and systematics of the Trematoda. Taxonomic revision to the generic level of the superfamily Echinostomatoidea. Taxonomic revisions to the species level. Five chapters in Keys to the Trematoda Vol. 2, CAB International & The Natural History Museum, UK.
  • Parasite biodiversity, systematics and phylogeny addressed by the application of morphological, biostatistical and molecular methods. Studies focused on parasites of Mediterranean fish including parasite pathogens in fish species of Mediterranean aquaculture (3 PhD students, 1 MSc student).
  • Trematode communities in molluscs as a model system to forecast the impact of climate change in freshwater ecosystems in Central Europe. Building of an advanced morphological and molecular database for rapid parasite identification and development of ecological framework for predictive modelling of parasite distribution patterns (1 PhD student).
  • Parasite communities as bioindicators of fish populations in the marine environment. Application of multivariate techniques and novel machine-learning algorithms to fish population discrimination and detecting the adverse effects of environmental pollution after the Prestige oil-spill (2 PhD students).
  • The role of parasitism in fish invasions in the Mediterranean. Development of methodology for monitoring the transition sequence of the invasive mugilid, M. soiuy, using parasite communities as invasion response indicators (1 PhD student, 1 MSc student).
