City Nature Challenge 2022 results

The seventh year of the worldwide City Nature Challenge has officially ended. Take a look with us at the interesting results that this year has brought.

A total of 447 cities from all over the world took part. More than 67,000 observers photographed over 1.69 million organisms, which were included in 50,176 species. The most successful city of this year's challenge was the Bolivian capital La Paz with an incredible number of observations, which exceeded 137,000. Congratulations! Results from around the world.

České Budějovice ranked 170th

And how did České Budějovice fare, which joined the challenge for the very first time? In four days, 82 people made 1,841 observations. The observed organisms were classified into a total of 543 species. With these great results, České Budějovice ranked 170th out of all cities in the world, overtaking, for example, the almost five times larger Scottish metropolis of Edinburgh and the capital of Hawaii, Honolulu. Within the Czech Republic, our city ranked 3rd. Prague won with more than 12,000 observations, which ranked an amazing 34th place worldwide. The second most successful Czech city was Brno (5934 observations). Uherské Hradiště recorded 1484 observations. Complete results of České Budějovice.

Among the most frequently photographed species in the territory of České Budějovice were the mallard duck (28 times) and the dandelion (17 times), which were also the most frequently recorded species worldwide. Of the plants, České Budějovice observers also captured the most exploded germander speedwell (16x), great stinging nettle (15x) and wood anemone (15x). Among the most frequently observed animals we can also find the eurasian coot (15 times), the european firebug (14 times), the mute swan (13 times) and the honey bee (13 times).

The participants in the call managed to capture even rarer and endangered species in České Budějovice, especially in the locality of Vrbenské rybníky. Among the birds, it was a critically endangered eurasian spoonnill (photographed 3x), Black-crowned night heron (photographed 1x), black-necked grebe (photographed 3x) or red-crested pochard (photographed 8x). The slow worm, which was photographed by five observers, is also one of the most endangered species. Among the rarer plants are, for example, the western marsh orchid (3x), the water arum (1x), the tufted sedge (3x), or the autumn crocus (4x).

The most active observer was the user "tiamat1" with 330 observations and 198 recorded species. Congratulations on an incredible performance.

The City Nature Challenge in České Budějovice was organized by the Biology Centre of the CAS under the auspices of the České Budějovice City Council. Thank you to the partners and everyone involved!
