Czechia Maintains Top Position in the Academic Freedom Index
The Czech Republic continues to hold a leading position in academic freedom according to the latest Academic Freedom Index (AFI) 2026. Based on data reflecting the situation at the end of 2025, Czechia scores approximately 0.98 and ranks first, followed by Estonia and Belgium.
The Academic Freedom Index assesses de facto levels of academic freedom across five dimensions: freedom to research and teach, freedom of academic exchange and dissemination, institutional autonomy, campus integrity, and freedom of academic and cultural expression. The current index covers 179 countries and territories and draws on assessments by more than 2,300 experts worldwide.
The result is particularly noteworthy against the backdrop of a global decline in academic freedom. Over the past ten years, academic freedom has significantly declined in 50 countries, while only nine have recorded improvements. This year's report also highlights the important role of institutional autonomy in protecting freedom of research and teaching.
The results confirm that the Czech Republic continues to provide a highly favourable environment for free research, teaching and academic exchange.
