PhD students wanted in Molecular Parasitology!

Under the supervision of Alena Zíková, the Functional Biology of Protists lab focuses on the unique bioenergetic properties of the fatal human parasite, Trypanosoma brucei.

The singular mitochondrion of this genetically tractable model organism undergoes dramatic structural and metabolic remodeling while responding to the different nutrients found in the various environments it encounters throughout its life cycle. Current projects in the lab include the following: 1) how mitochondrion metabolism adapts to various carbon sources; 2) the role of ATP synthase dimers to shape cristae and affect mitochondrial biogenesis; 3) how the mitochondrion acts as a signaling organelle during cellular differentiation. To elucidate the cellular and molecular mechanisms of these biological processes, we combine -omics approaches (bioinformatics, functional genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics) with the fields of biochemistry, genetics and structural biology.

Ph.D. candidates will be given their own project and the opportunity to further advance their skill set by spending up to three months in a lab of one of our collaborators. As the project develops, the student will have ample opportunities to attend international conferences to present their accomplishments and network with the scientific community.

We are a vibrant international group with a young and easily accessible group leader, creating a highly collaborative environment for a young scientist to develop the essential skills required for a successful career in research science. Our lab is located in a brand new facility on a university campus at the edge of historic České Budějovice. The compact city is famous for Budweis beer and offers many cultural and recreational activities that are easily accessible by foot, bike or city bus. Outdoor enthusiasts will also appreciate their close proximity to the wonderful CZ scenery and the Alps.
