Cell Biologist Hassan Hashimi Receives Professorial Decree
On 1 June 2026, the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, appointed Assoc. Prof. Hassan Hashimi, PhD, Professor in the field of Molecular and Cell Biology and Genetics. The ceremonial presentation of professorial decrees took place in the Great Hall of the Karolinum in the presence of the President of the Republic and the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Robert Plaga. A total of 93 newly appointed professors from Czech universities and research institutions received their professorial titles.
Professor Hassan Hashimi is a researcher at the Parasitology Institute of the Biology Centre CAS, where he has devoted many years to the study of mitochondria – cellular organelles responsible for energy production. Through his research on parasitic protozoa, he investigates how mitochondria evolved, how they maintain their internal architecture, and which molecular mechanisms govern their function. His work contributes to a deeper understanding of the fundamental principles underlying the organisation of eukaryotic cells.
The proposal for his appointment was submitted by the Scientific Council of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, where Professor Hashimi also holds an academic position.
Appointment to a professorship represents recognition of many years of outstanding scientific, educational and professional achievements. It also acknowledges Professor Hashimi’s significant contribution to the advancement of molecular and cell biology and genetics, as well as to the education and training of the next generation of scientists.
